Bandmaster and Chairman Drum Major - Francis (Fred) Harman

Francis (Fred) Harman followed his father’s footsteps into army music at the age of 15. Following two years at the Junior Musicians’ Wing, Pirbright, he then completed a one year course at Kneller Hall, The Royal Military School of Music. Fred then joined the Band of The Life Guards in 1967 and spent 22 years playing percussion and rising to the rank of W0II Band Corporal Major by the age of 29. During this time he performed in most major concert halls around the world and also took part in numerous TV, radio and recording sessions.

Apart from military music, Fred performed with some of the major civilian orchestras including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and for a few years with Musical Director for HAODS (the Henley-on-Thames Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society). After leaving the army in 1989, he joined British Airways and soon ventured into the world of brass bands. In 2001 Fred was appointed Bandmaster of the British Airways Band and his responsibilities include conducting the band in the absence of the Director of Music, rehearsing and organising engagements for the British Airways ‘B’ Band and acting as Drum Major during the main British Airways Band’s marching engagements.
